I Am My Worst Critic: 5 Ways To Overcome Self-Criticism

written by Nida May 20, 2017

I am my own worst critic & there is no doubt about it, nope not at all. It took me around two hours to come up with this blog post idea. Yes just the idea, I am not counting the write-up. Because there was a bunch of craziness going on in my head & I couldn’t figure out how to word it out properly. Let’s start with the basics, from a very young age we are taught to behave a certain way, eat a certain way, look a certain way, earn a certain amount etc. So, we have these criteria: I have to be a certain height, certain weight, certain age to be considered Beautiful. I have to be earning this much money, own these many properties to be considered successful. Who is setting these criteria? The media, society? Whoever it is, it plays a major role in Self-Criticism because we are constantly thriving to become something more & not happy with our current self.

It’s a vicious cycle – not being content & self- criticism. Throughout my life, I have been extremely critical of everything that I have done. Be it education, my looks, relationships & now my blogging. Today, I spent hours thinking Am I giving value back to my audience? Even if there are 10 people reading my post, are they getting something out of it? & then I receive these great messages from you guys that simply light up my days.  But coming back to the post, while trying to get over this state of confusion & self-criticism I searched & came out with a list of things to over- come it.

Has self-doubt ever made you question your abilities?
You know the voice in your head that starts whispering’
You are not good enough!
She is so much better than you.
Yes, that’s the monster I am talking about! Let’s be prepared for the beast.

  1. Self- Talk/Meditate:
Almost every other day I am talking to myself like a retard because all the negative feelings start to creep in & make me doubt my skills, compare to others, & literally do everything negative. Basically, I try to talk myself out of it, Self-doubt is a negative emotion & I try to counter attack it with positivity.

And you know how these successful people are so focused? It’s because of constant positive self-talk & Meditation.  They train their brains to strive for success through meditation. They use phrases like, Today is going to be great, or I am successful and It literally boosts the intellectual ability also improves the chances to achieving their goal. In Psychology, this is called positive self-affirmation.

“It’s not what you say out of your mouth that determines your life,it’s what you whisper to yourself that has the most power!” – Robert Kiyosaki

  2. Train Your Brain:
You can literally train your brain because we are capable of learning almost anything & everything. Train your brain to focus on your achievements & not what the hell others are doing. I mean, it’s natural We don’t even know & we start comparing our “work in progress” with their “success party” without even calculating the external factors like how much time the other person put in, the efforts, their challenges, their lifestyle etc. Whenever this happens, turn your system off & tell yourself to stop & say it out loud so you can hear it. Consistency is key my friend, you need to constantly remind yourself of your achievements & abilities. Believe in yourself first –for other’s to believe in you.
  3. Leaders are Readers:
I seriously find it so hard nowadays to take out time to read but I know I am missing out on a lot if I don’t get back to it. Reading is an escape from our daily life & that is something you are doing for yourself. You are adding value to yourself, your existence. You gain knowledge through someone else’s experience just by reading their stories. Articles that are relatable to your situation can help you in understanding that we all go through the same problems & doubt. You are not alone in this.
  4. The Perfection Trap:
Don’t fall for it, crawl out of it. Sometimes, we set unrealistic & really high expectations for us & when we are unable to achieve them, it results in disappointment. But remember there is a difference in giving your best & obsessing over something. If I can’t select a single photograph among fifteen clicks then I know instantly that I am being self-critical & I seek for other’s opinion. Someone in your family or a loyal friend who can give you true genuine advice. Imperfection is beautiful, it is unique & it’s your personal touch of creativity. Embrace all your imperfections.
  5. Pray/Have Faith:
When everything else fails, pray. When I have too much going on in my head, I start praying & start talking to God to help me out & help me succeed in focusing on my own life, my own problems. Additionally, putting your blind trust on God will solve half your problems and having faith that things will work out. Ask God for strength for wisdom and courage & know that there is a higher power who is in control.

“You’ve always had the power.” You just have to be still to find it. And when you do, you’re on the way to finding the fullest expression of you. – Oprah

A great and thoughtful post! It’s so easy to get caught up in our own negative self-talk and all your points are really relevant.

What has worked for me is to talk about it with someone close like my husband or sister and talk through the emotions and thoughts to really recognize how stupid it is. And then trying to re-train my brain is tougher but I’ve been trying to be mindful about my thoughts and how I describe and talk about myself and I try to counter it and use more kind and patient words. A work in progress but so worth it!
