The first birthday, aah more of a celebration for parents than the baby herself. I probably started planning for her birthday from the day she was born. Having a girl was like having an excuse to use all the pink and glitter in the world. =) I think the baby doesn’t even know what’s going on. Years later though in pictures they could see that they had a blast. hehe. It’s a bitter-sweet moment which requires tons and tons of planning. So, I spent days and nights in the baby room which turned into a crafts room with all the glitter, chart paper and glue on the floor. Cleaning it- was another ball game but totally worth it. So let’s get into it
Location, Theme, Invitation & Guest list:
I spent endless hours on Pinterest searching and pinning the items that I wanted. Probably around 3 months before her birthday. I wanted to be prepared and know exactly how I wanted things to be. The theme was pink & gold. We made a guest list and sent a preliminary email to them because It took me a while to make the invitation card. I made the invitation card on Canva, it was very basic nothing out of the ordinary. Also, we did the birthday party at our house.
I guess this was the most stressful part because I had an idea in my head of how I wanted things but I had no idea how to make them or do it. Most of the stuff I got was from Party city. In addition to that, my sister in law has her own event management business so she had a bunch of table clothes and beautiful accents at home, that I used for Zahra’s birthday. But I made a ton of things as well, like all the flowers at the backdrop, decoration on the table, personalized gift bags, tutu for Zahra’s high chair, giant 1 sign at the entrance, & her pictures from birth till she was 12. So the crafty stuff was from everywhere like a dollar store, Michaels, amazon & party city.
Cake & Dessert Table:
For the cake, I was sure that I wanted a three tier cake. The bottom one was fake and the top two were Nutella flavor. The cake was okay, it looked pretty but the taste was bearable. Probably the only thing that went wrong but I was okay with it. It wasn’t in my control & I am sure the girl who made it put all her hard work into it. For dessert table there were cupcakes ( I ordered them) I also made pretzels, Oreos & marshmallows dipped in candy melts. I think the whole night I was literally standing in the kitchen with the counter filled with pretzels and colored candy melts.
Honestly, I had no idea what I was wearing till the day actually arrived. But I was sure what Zahra will wear, hehe. I actually ordered two outfits for her and had a backup dress as well. She was smaller than the average 1-year-olds so that’s why I wanted to make sure I had a backup dress just in case the ordered dress doesn’t fit her well. But Alhumdulilah it did. I also got a sticker with her name and number 1 and I ironed it on a white onesie. I ordered it from an Etsy store, My Just Lovely. & It was extremely easy to use and turned out perfect. My idea was to pair it with a pink tutu which I got from amazon, she looked adorable.
A birthday party without games is incomplete. Kids love them & we had cute little gifts for them as well. The games included wrap the mummy (with toilet paper), Simon says, & musical chair. Because kids came with parents, we had a game for parents too. The husband and wife had to balance an apple between their forehead and not let it fall. It was pretty hilarious. Normally elders are a little hesitant for games but we convinced them & the living room was filled with laughter & joy.
Dinner & Dessert Table:
Food is always a crucial part of Desi parties if the food is not good, it’s basically a flop lol. My mother-in-law believes in cooking at home because it adds more love & shows more respects to the guests plus she her food is amazing. So we made almost all the dishes at home. Mainly she did all the cooking I just did one dish because I was so busy with the decor and everything else.
Goodie Bags & Thank You Cards:
I got a bunch of stuff for the goodie bags. The bags themselves were from Michaels. The goodie bags had Playdoh, Glow-in-the-Dark bracelets, pencils, stickers and other kiddy stationaries. I even customized the goodie bags with a little sticker which said “Hope you had a ONEderful time”- Zahra. & we had a lot of chocolate in them as well, it seemed like Halloween was back. lolMy Feelings:
I seriously spent day and night for this day & just wanted it to be special because it was her first birthday. When she grows up I can show her pictures of her smiling, laughing & playing. Alhumdulilah she didn’t cry while the cake ceremony or anything. I think any mother can relate to the feelings I had that day, seeing your little one grow up & not even know where the whole year went. Life has been a true blessing since the day she was born. This blog post is going to be very close to my heart, I can look back at it and see how wonderfully everything fell into place.
Thank you guys for motivating me to do this <3
